Australian Citizenship PDF Print E-mail

Australian Citizenship can be obtained through a variety of ways, some examples of which are as follows:

  • Citizenship by Birth: This means that you may qualify if you were born in Australia.

  • Citizenship by Decent: This means that either your father or mother was an Australian Citizen.

  • Citizenship through Residency Application: This is the most common method of obtaining citizenship if you are currently an Australian Permanent Resident. If you arrived in Australia as a permanent resident before the 1st July 2007 then you only have to be resident in Australia for 2 years before you can apply for Australian Citizenship. If you arrived in Australia as a permanent resident after the 1st July 2007 or obtained permanent residency after this date then you will need to be resident in Australia for 4 years, with the last 12 months needing to be as a permanent resident.
