A Skilled Independent Visa is one of the most common visas used to gain permanent residency in Australia. In order to qualify for this visa you must have a skilled occupation that is currently listed on the Skilled Occupation List. The maximum age you can apply for this visa is 44 and you must obtain 120 points or higher in the Points Test in order to qualify.

There are 2 types of Skilled Independent visa. The 175 is for those who are currently living outside of Australia and have recent work experience (12 months in the last 24 months) - you can be in Australia at the time you apply for this visa, but you must be outside of Australia when a decision is about to be made on your visa. The other is an 885 visa which is designed for those who have been studying in Australia for a minimum of 2 years prior to applying. You can apply for this visa in Australia providing you submit your visa within 6 months of completing your study or if you cannot do this, you can apply for a 485 visa. The 485 visa is for students who, for whatever reason, cannot submit a skilled visa application within 6 months of completing their Austraian studies. This is a temporary visa lasting 18 months and allows the holder to remain in Australia with full work rights. At anytime during the 18 months it is possible to apply for a 885 skilled visa.
