Please note that as of the 11th November 2010 the Minister for Immigration announced changes to the Points Test which will come in on the 1st July 2011.

 

In order to qualify for certain skilled visas you need to score a set number of points in order to qualify. The following gives details of how points can be obtained:

Points for Skill  - (Max 60 Points)

You can score between 40 and 60 points if you have an occupation that is currently listed on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL). In order to gain these points you must have worked in your nominated occupation at least 12 months in the 2 years. You also need to pass a skills assessment in your nominated occupation.

Age -  (Max 30 Points)

The maximum age you can apply is 44 and the points for age are as follows:

  • 18 to 29 = 30 points
  • 31 to 34 = 25 points
  • 35 to 39 = 20 points
  • 40 to 44 = 15 points

English Language Ability - (Max 25 Points)

If you are a British, US, Irish, Canadian, New Zealand Citizen you will receive 15 points for English and if you want to score 25 points you will need to take and English Language test called the IELTS and score 7 in each of the 4 sections.  If you come from any other country then you need to score 6 in each of the 4 sections of an IELTS test to score 15 points and again 7 in all 4 sections to score 25 points.

Specific Work Experience - (Max 10 Points)

In order to score points for specific work experience you need to have worked 3 years in the last 4 years in a nominated occupation. If your occupation is a 60 point occupation then you will score 10 points for this, but if it is a 40 or 50 point occupation then you will score 5 points. 

Australian Work Experience - (Max 10 Points)

If you have worked 12 months in the last 4 years in Australia in your nominated occupation then you will be awarded 10 points.

Australian Qualifications - (Max 25 Points)

If you have studied in Australia and obtained one of the following qualifications then you may be eligible for further points.

  • 25 Points - After studying 2 years in Australia for a PHD/Doctorate
  • 15 Points - Masters Degree: You have completed at least 3 years of study in Australia of which at least 1 year was on a masters course and 1 year on an undergraduate course. Note that both the undergraduate course and master course need to be in closely related subjects.
  • 15 Points - Degree Qualification (Honours):  You have completed at least 3 years of study in Australia and have been awarded an honours degree qualification.
  • 5 Points - Degree, Diploma or Trade Qualification: You have completed at least 2 years of study in Australia.

 Community Language - (Max 5 Points)

If you have a degree or completed a NAATI qualification to professional level in a community language then you can score 5 points.

Study in a Regional Area - (Max 5 Points)

If you have studied and lived in a regional area of Australia for 2 academic years then you are awarded 5 points.

Partner Skills - (Max 5 Points)

If your partner has the following then 5 points can be gained:

  • A skill on the skills occupations list and has worked in this occupation for 12 months out of the last 2 years
  • Passed a Skill Assessment in their nominated occupation
  • Meets the minimum English Language requirement which is either citizenship of UK, USA, Ireland, Canada or New Zealand or scored 6 in all 4 subjects in an IELTS test.
  • Is under 45 at the time of applying.

 State/Territory Sponsored - (Max 10 Points)

These 10 points are granted when you have received sponsorship approval from a State or Territory and can only be used with a State or Territory Sponsored visa. 

 **Please note that employment, for the purpose of this points test, can only include paid employment working over 20 hours a week.
